What Controls the Cost of Surveys?
Did you know the rule of thumb is that you should allocate
five to 10 percent of your overall project budget for measurement? Half should
be used for upfront research and the other half for evaluation. Currently I am
reading the book “Measure What Matters” by Katie Delahaye Paine. She gives tips
on how to control the cost of surveys.
The following are factors that influence the cost of surveying
an audience:
Number of questionnaires administered.
Length of questionnaire.
Cost of collecting names.
Difficulty in getting people to respond.
Customized versus syndicated research.
Overall the primary driver of expense is the amount of data
you collect. The more people you interview, postings you study or articles you
analyze, the higher the cost. I hope you now have a better understand of how to
control the cost of surveys. I would love to hear your thoughts or comments
below!
