Social Media Spotlight in 2017

Earlier this year, Forbes Magazine posted an article about how social media is one of the fastest changing industries out there. They concluded that in 2017 we are going to see five social media trends dominate. Being a millennial myself, I am excited to share these five trends that are going to impact our daily usage online.

1.     Social Messaging
Apps likes, Facebook Messenger, Viber, WeChat, and WhatsApp have a much wider community user base combined, than other social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram. As millennials, 62 percent of us are more loyal to brands that engage us via social messaging channels. We want the personal touch, transparency, and relationships that the one-on-one communication allows.

2.     Fighting Fake News
Because we are millennials, we rely heavily on the Internet as our number one source for news. However, “fake news” is on the rise. Sites are deliberately publishing and circulating inaccurate content and information on current events. Be cautious when receiving your news online. Always check with various reliable sources to ensure the information you received is correct and up to date.

3.     Authentic Content
Live video has begun to flood the social media world. Streaming video first became popular by Twitter’s Periscope, but now other sites like Facebook and Instagram are joining in. Social media is becoming fascinated with live, authentic content. Millennials love video content and are the most active video views of any age group in the United States. Be on the lookout for other social media platforms to join in on this up and coming trend.

4.     Augmented Reality
Augmented reality is an old technology that started to go viral thanks to social media. Snapchat was the first to bring the concept into the social sphere, with their puking rainbow filter. Since then, they have improved, but there is still a lot of room to expand in 2017. Augmented reality crates new opportunities for brands to connect with their audience by sharing experiences, rather than just information on social media. Be on the lookout for even more social media platforms to join in on this virtual reality.

5.     Chatbots
Today, many Chatbots are helping businesses improve their customer service by quickly responding to your comments and questions. It’s still early, but Chabots already have the intelligence and ability to help people consume content, answer questions, and complete transactions. As millennials, we desire self-service and like to resolve our customer service issues mainly through technology. The reason being, it is fast, efficient, and brief. Who knows, maybe brands might not even bother having a website at all, and will conduct all their customer relations through social media. What an idea?

What did you think of these five social media trends, expected to rise during 2017? Share your thoughts below!

Comments

  1. As a millennial, I am grateful to have all of these additions to our social media experience. Social messaging is great, but I am still old school in the fact that I prefer to call people rather then message them sometimes. Fake news is the biggest issue, and is the main reason why I stopped going on Facebook, but some of it can be entertaining. Live chats are gonna be awesome, I cannot wait for someone to go live at the movies. Augmented reality was a game changer, whatever comes next with it, I am ready. Now chatbots, I don't know about those. I have seen Irobot, I don't know if I can talk to them online yet. Anyway, thanks for posting these updates.
