ONU PRSSA Takes on Cleveland, Ohio

Yesterday, I traveled with the Ohio Northern University (ONU) Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) chapter to Cleveland, Ohio for an industry tour. Each semester, our organization travels to an area of interest. In the past we have traveled to Chicago, Illinois, Nashville, Tennessee and Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Our day started off by leaving ONU at 6 a.m. to head to the Cleveland Indians, our first stop for the day. This was my favorite for the three other places we visited by far. We had the opportunity to go on the field, tour the dugout and player resources, including the weight room. We concluded our tour by visiting the press boxes and talking with Curtis Danburg, senior director of communications for the Cleveland Indians.

We then traveled to Thunder::Tech, a digital marketing agency where member, Joe Dunay interned this summer. Alumna, Madison Letizia, director of communications for Thunder::Tech met with us and gave us a tour of the agency. In addition, she invited two of her coworkers to sit on a panel and answer questions we had. Many of these ranged from professional advice to how to engage with clients. Thunder::Tech provided me personally with a plethora of knowledge and advice for applying for jobs.

Our third stop was Playhouse Square, Cleveland, Ohio’s nonprofit performing arts center whose mission is to present and produce a wide variety of quality performing arts. Here we met with Cindi Szymanski, assistant director of brand marketing and communications. She shared with us the history of Playhouse Square and how their public relations and marketing operations work.

Our last stop was at Marcus Thomas, a full-service advertising agency. Abby Brock, an ONU PRSSA member interned over the summer as a public relations intern. We met with her supervisor, Erin Orsini, management supervisor of public relations for the agency. We received a tour of their space and Erin explained her role and how Marcus Thomas operates. One aspect that really caught my attention was that their teams and office space was categorized based on the type of client. For example, all home and garden team members sat on one side of the office.

Overall, the trip was a success. There were a few bumps in the road, but what’s a trip without them? I can’t wait to travel with ONU PRSSA the rest of the year. I am sure we will have some other great adventures and experiences.
